2004 Annual Council Meetings

Vice President (Latin America) - Report

As regional Vice President, following is the second report since the first presented six months ago, a short lapse of time to present an ample list of achievements.

Before pointing out the duties developed during this period I consider it is important to make a note of the general satisfaction experienced during the Bureau meeting in South Africa, a country, for most of us, surprising. The places we got to know and the knowledge received during the conferences and visits to the farms and in all other aspects related to the Jersey breed in this region of the world were very enriching for all of us who had the opportunity to live this experience, specially for the delegates of the Latin American countries, of whom I received the sensation it was a once in a life time positive experience in all it’s aspects. The integration and strengthening of personal and institutional relationships around the Jersey atmosphere was one of them.

Making reference to the duties done by the vice presidency, we continued with the main objective in the dynamics of integrating the regional Jersey Associations by obtaining a vast and detailed knowledge of the activities of each one. To reach this purpose we elaborated a form in which we asked the entities of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Brasil, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay and Argentina punctual information on the date of foundation of their association, the number of members, the way in which the registration and classification programs are done, as well as the composition of their board of directors and the events that each organize in their countries as an instrument of development and promotion of the Jersey breed.

Until this time I have received information of the following countries:

MEXICO
The information from Asociación Jersey de Mexico was received on time. At present, the President Chairman of the Board is Ing. Gerardo Labastida Aguirre, Secretary Dr. Jorge Eduardo Ponce MVD and Treasury Lic. Arturo Gonzalez Courtade. During the year 2003; 3097 cows were recorded for milk production and their average was 6,384 kilograms in 305 day lactations. During the same year the appraisal program completed the classification of 1095 cows conducted by Official Classifier Dr. Juan Francisco Ornelas, MVD. The average was 82 points.

GUATEMALA
The Guatemala Association response includes an extended report in which they make reference to the Jersey inbreeding in this Central American country. The document was prepared with the purpose of being sent to Global Jersey for its publication, but because it was written in Spanish and the publication due date was too close to the time the document was received, there was not enough time to make a translation and send it back for it to be published. All the information is enclosed in the form filled by Mr. Carlos Arnoldo Melgar President of the Association.

ECUADOR
From Ecuador we received good information from Mr. Miguel Proaño, author of the article on Ecuador which is on the Bureau’s Web page and who is not a member of the board of directors of this association. He advised that to be able to get data on registers and classification is necessary to make direct contact with Mr. Milton Guerra at the association. All our efforts to make telephone contact with them have been unsuccessful.

NICARAGUA
Making reference to the inscription made by the Jersey Association of Nicaragua, we made contact by e-mail with Mr. Alberto Celedòn, who requested a participation in the World Jersey Cattle Bureau during the meeting in Costa Rica. He explained to me that he is the only Jersey cattle owner in the country and because of this he handles his farming data through the association of Costa Rica and under these circumstances he will not formalize his affiliation.

URUGUAY
I am very happy to have the opportunity to visit Uruguay before the meeting in Argentina. I have offered to visit Estancia Las Rosas where they are programming a meeting with Jersey breeders, members of the Association. This is going to be a great opportunity to come in contact with them.

COLOMBIA
Colombia filled out the totality of the form with the data requested. During 2003, 564 purebred female registers were issued, 35 males and 20 other breeds females crossbred with a Jersey bull. A total of 550 cows were appraised with an average of 82 points.

This vice presidency wants to note and thank the suitable, dynamic and frequent communication with the Canadian and USA associations. Mr. Russell Gammon sent several important contacts of Ecuadorian colleagues such as Mr. Proaño and in Panama Mr. Agustín Espinosa, owner of a Jersey farm and who has expressed his interest in affiliating to the Jersey Colombia association with the objective to receive our service of his animals registration.
All the reports received are attached to this document.

Respectfully submitted.

Gonzalo Maldonado
