18th WJCB Conference
Jersey, May 2008
Pre-Conference Tour of the United Kingdom - 10th to 18th May,
Taking in some of the most picturesque locations to be found in England, your eight day tour will begin in the South East
and will include visits to some of the flagship Jersey farms, including the Royal Farm at Windsor, home to Her Majesty
The Queen’s own Jersey herd.
From here the tour will continue north, providing the chance to see two of the UK’s greatest National Parks, the North
York Moors and the famous ‘James Herriot Country’ of the Yorkshire Dales. Continuing down the west of the country,
visits take in the City of Chester and Ironbridge (the birthplace of the industrial revolution). Highlights include a
steam train ride on the Severn Valley Railway, and a tour of one of the UK’s most famous heritage sites, Stonehenge.
Following a day at the Devon Show, which includes a British show of Jerseys, delegates visit and enjoy dinner at
Salisbury Cathedral. The pre-conference tour week finishes with a day in London for an excellent opportunity to take
in some of the sights and sounds of the Capital City.
Conference Week - Island of Jersey - 18th to 25th May
Your conference week in the idyllic Channel Island home of the Jersey breed is a chance not to be missed. Staying in
one of the Island’s premier hotels for the duration of your stay, there will be a real opportunity to relax and enjoy
the best the Island has to offer. The 18th WJCB International Conference will be informative and challenging with a
line up of top speakers. As well as the formal sessions, there will be an alternative tour programme running alongside
taking in the Island’s top visitor attractions, including the world famous ‘War Tunnels’.
Every day will be filled with memorable activities and visits, and the opportunity to meet some of the Island’s true
characters. Evening entertainment includes a visit and dining at the globally acclaimed Durrell Wildlife Conservation
Trust, an al fresco buffet at Mont Orgueil - a 13th Century castle with commanding coastal views, as well as a finale
dinner at one of the Island’s manor houses.
Farm visits will take you to the Island’s prized herds, ‘Coming Home’ to where it all began. A chance to renew old
friendships, meet today’s breeders of the Jersey in its Island home, compare experiences and discuss issues affecting
the Jersey and dairying around the world. The week will culminate with the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural
Society’s ‘Foire de Jersey’ a traditional Spring show with a food fair, hospitality and entertainments, as well as the
Island’s Conference Show.
In 2008, the RJA&HS is also celebrating its 175th Anniversary. The 18th World Jersey Cattle Bureau Conference is the
pinnacle of the year of celebration and promises to make the event special for all. It will be an opportunity to meet
and renew friendships with Jersey cattle breeders from all 38 member countries worldwide. A trip to Jersey, the Island
home of the breed, is a must for all Jersey cattle enthusiasts at least ‘once in a lifetime’.
Post-Conference Tour of Northern France - 25th May to 1st June
The post conference week begins with a short ferry journey from the Island of Jersey to Brittany, in North West France,
and the port of St Malo, famed for its ancient walled city and excellent cuisine. From here you will travel to the
abbey of Mont St Michel and have a tour of this famous world heritage site located one mile off the coast of Normandy.
Moving north you will have a guided visit of the World War 2 Normandy Landing Beaches and Omaha Beach, along with a visit
to the Caen Memorial and the American Cemetery. The tour continues in Bayeux where you will be able to view the famous
tapestry depicting the battle of Hastings in 1066.
Moving into the Loire region of France you will be indulged with the gastronomic delights for which France is rightly
famous. Visits will be made to a number of Jersey herds including a long-established creamery, which produces speciality
organic produce marketed all over France.
The tour then takes a leisurely pace visiting the Parc Oriental, one of the largest Japanese gardens in Europe. This is
followed by a journey into the wine cellars at Saumur which have been carved into the limestone rock creating intricate
passages through which you will wander, learning the process of wine production with the opportunity for some samples of
one of the finest wines from the region.
This historic journey continues with a visit to the Chateau Azay Le Rideau - an impressive castle built in the 15th
Century on an island in the Indre River, whose foundations rise straight out of the water offering a very unique setting.
The week continues with a visit even further into history in 10th Century Chartres with its magnificent Cathedral.
A visit to Giverney, the home of world famous impressionist painter Claude Monet will seem so familiar as his garden
preserved there was the subject of many of his most famous works. The tour ends in Paris, with a spectacular day of
sightseeing and an evening river cruise finale.
