Mexico

The livestock industry in Mexico ranges from simple domestic units to technologically sophisticated operations. Small-scale enterprises make up some 70% of the total, but overall, the industry shows low productivity with low production levels and high associated costs. There are about 1.5 million dairy cattle in Mexico, including a small but growing number of Jerseys. In the tropical zones, more Jersey-Zebu crosses are to be found with just a few pure Jersey herds. In the central and northern regions, the Jersey herds are kept in modern dairy conditions, with the largest herd having over 1,000 cows averaging in excess of 7,000 litres of milk. The modern Jersey in Mexico is based on American and Canadian bloodlines.
