INTERNATIONALLY
RECOGNIZED DAIRY SCIENTIST JOINS ROSTER OF SPEAKERS AT FIRST JERSEY RESEARCH
SUMMIT
February 17,
2005, Reynoldsburg, Ohio—Christopher K. Reynolds, recipient of major awards for
excellence in dairy research in the United States and Great Britain, will speak
about the challenges of maintaining Jersey resources for basic and applied
research at the first Jersey Breeders’ Research Summit, March 5 in Columbus,
Ohio.
Sponsored by
the AJCC Research Foundation, the summit will identify research needs from the
producers' perspective, then allow participants to discuss priorities relative
to breeding and management of Jersey cattle and the production and marketing of
Jersey milk.
Jersey dairy
business owners, dairy industry personnel and academic researchers are invited
to the open session starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn-Columbus Airport.
The summit is being held in conjunction with the winter meetings of the
directors of the American Jersey Cattle Association and National All-Jersey
Inc.
Dr. Reynolds
is the author or co-author of 69 peer-reviewed scientific papers, reviews and
book chapters and numerous articles in the popular farm press. From 1985 to 1993
he worked as a USDA Research Animal Scientist in the Energy Metabolism Unit of
the Ruminant Nutrition Laboratory, Beltsville, Md. He conducted studies of
nutritional physiology and energy and protein metabolism of growing and
lactating ruminants, as well as the energy metabolism of divergent breed types
with Dr. Henry Tyrrell. In 1994 he received the American Dairy Science
Association Agway Young Scientist Award.
From 1993 to
2002, Dr. Reynolds was a Senior Research Fellow and Lecturer working primarily
at the Centre for Dairy Research at The University of Reading, England. He was
the principal investigator or co-investigator for research supported by grants
in excess of $3.25 million (U.S.). He received the British Society of Animal
Science Sir John Hammond Memorial Prize for outstanding research
contributions.
In 2002, Dr.
Reynolds accepted appointment as Associate Professor at The Ohio State
University, working at the Ohio Agricultural Research & Development Center
(OARDC) in Wooster. He received funding from the AJCC Research Foundation in
2003 for research on the relationship of fiber requirements, milk yield and milk
composition of Jerseys compared to Holsteins.
Founded in
1967, the AJCC Research Foundation has provided seed money for well-designed
scientific investigations related to high-priority areas affecting the Jersey
breed of dairy cattle:
·
Nutrition of
high-producing Jerseys (particularly practical feeding methods to maximize
production of valuable milk components);
·
Factors
affecting yield of products manufactured from Jersey milk;
·
Factors
affecting net income, longevity, and lifetime profit;
·
Breeding
plans to optimize genetic gain while maintaining genetic diversity;
·
Biological
and economic efficiencies of Jerseys; and
·
Factors
affecting management of Jersey calves.
Nearly $600,000 in grants has been awarded by the Foundation since 1988. The 2005 grants will be announced in Columbus, Ohio in early March.
Reservations
for the Research Summit are not required, but would be appreciated. The Holiday
Inn Airport is located at 750 Stelzer Road in Columbus. Contact Cari
