"Champion Season" - at the "bottom of the world"

(paper cutting from the Southland Times of 8th Feb 2005)

WJCB members, Annette and Gerald Gunther (Wallacetown, New Zealand), have had a great show season with their five year old cow Spring Terrace Trim Olive - 91 points VHC. She is sired by the great Ivanhoe Red Triumph and is from a dominant cow family which has over 30 members in the Spring Terrace herd.

Spring Terrace Trim Olive - 91 points VHC
4871 Ltrs 286kgs Fat 207kgs Protein 236 days at 5 Years
(Peaked at 30 liters a day current season)

Olive's full sister, Spring Terrace Trim Odelle - 91 points VHC, yielded:
5671 Litres 283kgs Fat 214kgs Protein 243 days at 6 Years this season.

(The production of these two cows was done on grass with 1 Kg cake a day from calving for 2 months, and the short number of days lactation is because the Gunthers only herd test 4 times a year, even though they actually milk for 280 days).

The Gunthers write:
"In 1962 we formed part of our herd with 3 heifer calves from Mr A C Gray. WAI LEA ORNAMENT was one of the 3 calves. She classified HC, and was a true matriach, and founded the wonderful family descended from her that we have today. We must be on the 8th generation and have about 30 head still. The family are always strong cows upstanding with great udders and a terrific will to milk. They all have excellent milk let down and milking temperament. They are no-nonsense cows with good agressive pasture feeding attitudes. An American Holstein breeder friend said when he saw them "Boy they ARE good. The kind that makes you want to go down to the barn every morning."

Ivanhoe Red Triumph has daughters world wide producing extemely well, and the Gunthers still have some semen from him.

Brackenhurst Triumphs Borage has been winning at shows in England (handler, Mick Saxby)
9890 litres @ 4.95% Fat 3.75% Protein 305 days - 2nd lactation.

  • 'Triumph' also has daughters producing up to 23,000 lbs milk as 3 yr olds in USA
  • In Victoria, Australia a 'Triumph' daughter is classified 92 points
  • A New Zealand show winner and good producer by 'Triumph' classified 94 points

'Triumph' traces back to the bull Rochette Rex 2nd from the Holley herd on Jersey Island!, and the famous New Zealand cow Kevilor Sameem VHC appears 16 times in his 7 generation pedigree. That is why he is so prepotent. She bred many outstanding sons.
