South Africa
The Jersey breed is constantly increasing its market share in the South African dairy industry. From
1991 to 2001, milk recorded Jerseys increased from 21% to 39% of all dairy cows. They showed a 14.6% increase in milk
production and 13.42% increase in fat and protein production. In South Africa, Jersey milk is appreciated and commands
a price reflective of its value. The South African Jersey is a blend of many genetic bases, starting mainly with Island
bloodlines, but now with a strong North American influence, augmented with genetics from New Zealand, Denmark, and Jersey.
In June 2000 Jersey SA started a National bull testing programme with a goal to test 30 young sires per year.
The 2007 National Jersey show will be held in Bloemfontein in the Freestate during the last weekend in March. The judges
for this show are all well known dairymen in South Africa and Canada. Coen Steenkamp and Danie Giliomee will judge the
heifers, Gary Bowers (Canada) and Pierre Human will judge the Jersey Jug, while Gary and Johan Jooste will judge the cows.
The expectation is 260 animals from 20 breeders.
