About the WJCB Youth Travel Scholarship

Spanish

The World Jersey Cattle Bureau Youth Travel Scholarship was introduced in 1982 (under the name of WJCB International Youth Exchange Programme) to enable young people who are interested in Jersey cattle and dairying to travel to other countries to gain experience with the Jersey breed.

Who can take part in the programme?

All young people between eighteen and twenty-six years of age.

Where can I go?

The World Jersey Cattle Bureau has, at present, 30 national member and national associate member countries, which are all available for visits. Just click Country Profiles for further information about each country. Most countries have a WJCB Youth Scholarship Co-ordinator to help with planning a stay in their country.

Can I travel when I want?

Yes – the programme is designed to accommodate all requirements relating to time of year, seasons, etc. Naturally, because it embraces all parts of the world, there are certain times of the year which are better for students to travel, and this can be arranged at the local level.

For how long can I go?

There are no specific time lengths for visits, but a stay of three to six months is recommended.

How much will it cost?

This varies, depending on individual circumstances, but in general the only costs are for actual travel to the country of your choice, and such associated costs as insurance, spending money, etc.
Emphasis must be made that all participants are insured for travelling and your stay on the farms in the respective country.
There is a special Trust Fund from which travelling assistance may be made and applications will be considered individually. From this grant it is especially hoped to encourage young people from developing countries to participate, who, without such help, would be unable to travel.

What about passports, visas, work-permits, vaccinations, etc?

Each country requires that a visitor must have a current passport, and in some cases, but not all, a visa for travelling is also required. All these questions can be answered on a personal basis by the local co-ordinator in your country, or the international co-ordinator, Mrs Anne Corner at robanne.corner@btinternet.com

Do I have to travel alone?

No – the programme provides for more than one person to travel together – however, once in the country, you will be billeted on separate farms.

Will I be met at the destination?

Yes – arrangements are made for someone to meet you at the airport and take care of you from your point of arrival until departure. All the people involved in the programme are Jersey folk who will make your stay welcome and happy.

If I find that I don’t get on with my host family, what happens?

This is something which will rarely occur as we are careful to select families who are friendly and helpful, but if the situation arises, you contact either the local co-ordinator in that country, or the international co-ordinator, and alternative arrangements will be quickly made.

What can the programme offer?

• MORE KNOWLEDGE OF THE JERSEY BREED
• LEARNING EXPERIENCE
• FRIENDSHIP
• POSSIBILITY OF LEARNING ANOTHER LANGUAGE
• SEEING A COUNTRY AND ITS CULTURE

What do we expect of you?

• A report of your visit for your Jersey Association and the International Co-ordinator.
• A stay of three to six months.
• Learning and Interest.
