Recently there has been a huge incease in the interest in Jerseys, as the milk pricing has changed from based on liquid to
components. Demand is currently outstripping supply and commercial beef breeders are crossing Borans (a Kenyan Zebu) with
Jerseys to take advantage of this. There are a few pure bred herds mainly using USA bulls; these herds supply small
holders with breeding stock and cross-bred animals. The rich creamy milk very much in demand as sour or feremted mavisi is
very popular. Production is approx 3800 to 4500 litres per lactation at 4.6% to 4.8% butterfat for the better herds.
The Jersey breeders come under the Dairy Section of the Herd Book Society of Zambia. Box 50146, Lusaka, Zambia.

2005 News
Dai Harvey reports in his e-mail of 6th January 2005:
The America dairy co-operative Land o Lakes has initiated a smallholder dairy operation programme in Zambia. After
much deliberation and research the team decided that the genetic improvement component will be based on World Wide Sire
Jersey semen. Inseminators have been trained, semen tanks filled with US Jersey semen have been sent to Zambia, and the
programme is now operational. Approximately 1,000 head of grade black and whites and Tonga cattle have been inseminated.
The Jersey crosses will hit the ground some time later in 2005. The four-year programme will eventually provide an
increasing number of Jerseys and Jersey-cross dairy cattle countrywide.
2005 National Agricultural Show
The 2005 National Agricultural Show, held in Lusaka 18th July to 1st August, saw Jersey classes being strongly supported
by several new participants, especially from the small scale section. This was very encouraging and bodes well for
the future of this breed in Zambia. Jersey judge was Chrisjan Van der Vyver of Taurus AI Coop in South Africa. There were 28
Jerseys at the show out of a total of 74 dairy cattle.
The Jersey Champion was Mulangali Hilda J245 sired by Duncan Prince Malcolm, who also won Reserve Supreme Champion
Dairy Animal on show.

There continues to be increased interest in the Jerseys especially within the small holder section who are looking for
